| Distinguished Service Medal To recognise outstanding and excellent contributions by staff to the achievement of the goals of the University of Tasmania, it is proposed that a Distinguished Service Medal be awarded on an annual basis. The Distinguished Service Medal will be awarded to an individual member of staff who, over a number of years, has made an outstanding contribution, and provided distinguished service, to the University. Awardees will have given outstanding service to the University, a level of service which has not only been of high distinction but has significantly exceeded the scope and commitment of usual expectations. Distinguished service may take the form of outstanding teaching, research and scholarship, administration and/or community service. Only one award will be given each year. In recognition of the special and unique honour bestowed on a staff member by their successful nomination, the award of the Distinguished Service Medal will consist of a specially-commissioned medallion plus a grant of $25,000. Eligibility: The Medal will be open to all employees of the University of Tasmania. Generally, it would be expected that nominees wil be able to demonstrate that their contribution has been made over an extended period of employment with the University. Nomination procedure: Any University employee or an external body/person may propose a nomination. All nominations must be seconded by someone from a different Faculty, School, Institute, Division or from a recognised body external to the University. Self-nominations are not permissible. Nominations must include the name and signatures of the nominee, nominator and seconder. Nominations should include a statement from the nominator which clearly demonstrates the significance of the nomination and provides clear examples of a consistently high level of outstanding contributions and distinguished service to the University. Written statements from referees may also be included, to a maximum of two pages per referee; maximum of three referees. Nominations should be forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor's Office. The closing date for applications will be approximately one month after nominations are opened. All nominations will remain confidential. Assessment: A Distinguished Service Medal Selection Committee will consider the nominations and make recommendations to the Vice-Chancellor. The Selection Committee will comprise – The Deputy Chancellor The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) & Provost One Academic staff member nominated by Academic Senate One General staff member nominated by the Vice-Chancellor One external member of University Council.
